what the film does

the year is 2019. a plague carried by an infected vampire bat has turned most of the world’s population into vampires. the remaining uninfected humans are hunted, captured, and kept alive in farms so their blood can be harvested. the vampires who run the world face a crisis of their own: the blood supply is running out, and vampires deprived of blood degenerate into bestial creatures called subsiders. edward dalton (hawke) is the head hematologist at bromley marks, the largest corporate blood supplier. he refuses to drink human blood and works on a synthetic substitute. his research is interrupted when a group of human survivors, led by the cured vampire elvis (dafoe), reveals that a reversion is possible. a cure exists. the question becomes who controls it.

why this one

the film inverts the vampire genre and then plays the inversion straight. vampires are not monsters lurking at the edges of society. they are the society. they commute through underground tunnels and uv-filtered cars. they drink blood in coffee shops, with the blood percentage dialed down as supplies dwindle. the horror is administrative. sam neill’s charles bromley does not want to cure the blood shortage. he wants to sell the synthetic substitute to the masses while hoarding pure human blood for the wealthy. the farm where humans are drained is a production line. the film’s central image is corporate, not gothic.

ethan hawke carries the moral center quietly. edward dalton was turned against his will by his own brother frankie (michael dorman), and he has spent his unlife trying to remain human in every way that matters. willem dafoe is the counterweight. elvis was cured by accident when his sun-proof car crashed and ejected him into daylight. the precise exposure burned the vampirism out of him. dafoe plays the discovery with a mechanic’s pragmatism and most of the film’s comic relief.

the spierig brothers built the world with production design rather than exposition. the film was shot in brisbane at village roadshow studios, and the night city it renders feels like a functioning economy. the blood shortage is shown through rationing, price signals, and the spread of subsiders in the streets. martial law follows. the film trusts its premise enough to follow it to the feeding frenzy at the end.

what stays with me

the scene where charles bromley turns his own daughter alison into a vampire against her will, and she refuses to drink human blood until she devolves into a subsider and is executed by being dragged into sunlight. the farm that produced her refuses to mourn her. the film’s cruelty is not the biting. it is the accounting.
